Arlene y Bonnie eran dos niñas que se conocieron en el más costoso colegio de la zona norte de la ciudad, al principio de este curso. Se llevaban una semana de diferencia por lo que la edad de las dos era de 12 años. Siempre que no estaban en sus pupitres estaban juntas. Comían todos los días sus desayunos que les preparaban sus madres e, incluso, algunos días se los intercambiaban para variar los sabores. Rubias las dos, en su clase todos las llamaban: las gemelas.

            Un día, el papá de Bonnie recibió una llamada de un nuevo cliente que necesitaba que le desatascaran la de chimeneas ya que pronto llegaría el invierno. Su trabajo era muy peligroso y a cuanta más altura tuviera que subir para realizarlo, más cara cobraba la factura. Ese día estaba muy cargado de usuarios del servicio, pero logró encontrar un hueco para atender la nueva petición. Siempre decía que “un cliente contento, siempre repite”. Al llegar, a mitad de la tarde llegó a la casa de su nuevo cliente se encontró, de sorpresa, con Arlene, la amiga de su hija. Lo que no había percibido era que la verdaderamente sorprendida había sido la niña.

            Ese día cambiaron muchas cosas. Eso sí, los padres de Arlene quedaron muy satisfechos del trabajo. Pero para las dos niñas ya no fue lo mismo. Arlene empezó a huir a Bonnie que no entendía bien lo que pasaba. Así fueron pasando los días hasta que las dos casi “hermanas” llegaron a ser como dos extrañas. Una noche, en la cena, al padre se le ocurrió preguntar a Bonnie como iban las clases y la niña le refirió el cambio de actitud de su amiga. Él relató el día que fue a limpiarle la chimenea de su casa de lujo y argumentó que le debía ir muy bien a su padre en su despacho de abogado para tener una casa así. La madre y ellos dos se quedaron comentando los sueños de poder tener algún día una casa con piscina. Bonnie terminó diciendo que sería abogada para tener mucho dinero como el padre de Arlene.

            Un día la rubia no fue a clase y Bonnie se preocupó, pero no fue hasta la tercera falta que no preguntó por ella a la profesora. Le contestaron que no volvería a ver a Arlene porque la habían sacado del colegio. Aunque en la distancia de la indiferencia, la seguía queriendo y aunque tuviera que respetar que ella no quisiera seguir con la amistad, la echaría de menos. Esa tarde, se armó de valor y se apostó en la puerta de la casa a esperar que entrara el abogado para preguntarle por su hija. Lo abordó a la entrada y le interrogó a lo que el hombre, cabizbajo, tuvo que decirle que la habían quitado del colegio por no poder pagar las altas mensualidades.

            Llegó llorando a casa por no entender lo que ocurría. Se supone que los padres de su amiga eran ricos y debería ser ella la que no tuviera con qué pagar las cuotas. Todo se aclaró en la cena. La madre de Bonnie le contó que ellos podían pagar las mensualidades porque su padre tenía muchos clientes que pagaban altas sumas por limpiar sus chimeneas ya que es un trabajo que no pueden asumir ellos por el alto riesgo que tiene subir por las alturas. En cambio, el trabajo de abogado está mucho más masificado y muchos tienen que bajar los precios para poder tener clientes. De esa manera a muchos, es de suponer, no les llega para cubrir las necesidades del mes.

            Sin decir nada, el padre de Bonnie fue a hablar con el padre de Arlene que le tuvo que reconocer la disminución masiva de clientes con la consabida pérdida de poder adquisitivo. Apenado el padre de Bonnie le dijo que no se preocupara, que él le limpiaría la chimenea gratis hasta que él pudiera pagar la factura y, a cambio, le tendría que rellenar los papeles de los impuestos que tan mal se le daba. El abrazo lo vio la niña que estaba escondida escuchando la conversación. Y ese día volvió a cambiar todo. Ya no se verían en el colegio, pero con el padre, Arlene le mando una invitación a Bonnie para que fuera a merendar a su casa al día siguiente. Ella aceptó con la alegría más grande que se había llevado nunca.

            Y, cara a cara, Arlene le confesaba a Bonnie que había aprendido una lección que sería para siempre y era que las personas más ricas no son las que más dinero tienen, si no las que tienen el corazón más grande a lo que Bonnie contestó: “pues nosotras, de mayores, tenemos que ser las más ricas de la ciudad.

     Arlene and Bonnie were two girls who met at the most expensive school in the North area of the city at the beginning of the school year. Their birthdays were only a week apart, so they both were 12 years old. Whenever they weren’t sitting at their desks they were together. Every day they ate the meals their mothers had prepared and some days they even exchanged them to taste new flavours. Both blonde, all their classmates called them “the twins”.

     One day, Bonnie’s father received a phone call from a new client who needed to get his chimney unblocked given that winter was coming. His job was very dangerous and the higher he had to climb to do it, the more expensive the bill was. That day he was very busy with lots of chimneys to clear but he managed to find time to meet this petition. As he used to say, “A happy client always comes back”. When he arrived at the house that afternoon, he met, surprisingly, Arlene, his daughter’s friend. What he didn’t realise was that the truly surprised one was the girl.

​

     That day lots of things changed. Now, Arlene’s parents were very pleased by the chimney unblocking. But things weren’t the same between the girls. Arlene started avoiding Bonnie, who didn’t understand why. Days passed and the almost sisters became two strangers. One night during dinner, Bonnie’s father asked her about school and she told him about her friend’s strange attitude. He then told her about the day he unblocked the chimney of her luxurious house and argued that her father should’ve be doing well in his lawyer’ office to afford such a house. The family kept telling each other their dreams of having some day a house with a swimming pool. Bonnie even said she wanted to be a lawyer so she could have as much money as Arlene’s dad.

​

     One day in which Arlene didn’t go to school Bonnie worried about her, but she didn’t ask the teacher about her until her third absence in a row. She was told that she wouldn’t see her friend again because she had left the school. Although they weren’t as close as they used to be she still loved her, and although she respected her choice of leaving their friendship aside she would miss her. That afternoon she summoned up all her courage and presented herself at Arlene’s doorstep. She waited for her dad to arrive and when he did she interrogated him, who crestfallen confessed they had sent Arlene to a different school because they were unable to pay the last one.

​

     Bonnie, not understanding what was happening, arrived home in tears. Arlene’s parents were supposed to be rich and it should be her who couldn’t pay the school taxes. It was all explained during dinner. Bonnie’s mum explained that they could afford that school because her dad had lots of clients who paid a huge amount of money for having their chimneys clean because they couldn’t do it themselves given that it was too risky. However, the amount of lawyers was incredibly high and many had to lower their prices in order to have clients. Because of this, sometimes they didn’t earn enough money to pay their needs. 

​

     Without telling the rest of the family, Bonnie’s father went to talk to Arlene’s, who admitted being through hard times because of a massive loss of clients and the consequent loss of purchase power. Saddened to know this, Bonnie’s dad told him not to worry: he would unblock his chimney for free until he was able to pay the bill and, in return, he would have to do the tax paper work for him given that he didn’t know very well how to do it. The hug they gave each other was witnessed by the girl, who hiding spying the conversation. That was the day everything changed again. “The twins” wouldn’t attend the same school anymore, but Arlene sent with Bonnie’s father an invitation for her to have a meal at her house the following day. She accepted with the deepest joy she had ever felt.

​

     And so, face to face, Arlene confessed Bonnie she had learnt a lesson she would always remember: the richest people were not the ones with more money, but the ones with the biggest hearts; to which Bonnie answered “So we, when older, have to be the richest in the whole city”.
